Franklin Kiermyer was born on 21 July 1956 and is a jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader. He has worked and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Lester Bowie, and Miles Davis. Kiermyer first gained attention in 1994 with his album Solomon’s Daughter, featuring tenor saxophonist and former John Coltrane bandmate Pharoah Sanders.
Kiermyer has toured all over the world and has played at some of the most prestigious festivals and venues. He grew up in Montreal, Canada, and started playing the drums when he was just four years old. His first drums were bongos, which his grandfather got for him when he was 9-years-old. His musical output during this time was minimal. Kiermyer has stated that he felt this period was instrumental in reaching his spiritual and musical goals.
