Franklin Kiermyer Biography

Franklin Kiermyer was born on 21 July 1956 and is a jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader. He has worked and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Lester Bowie, and Miles Davis. Kiermyer first gained attention in 1994 with his album Solomon’s Daughter, featuring tenor saxophonist and former John Coltrane bandmate Pharoah Sanders.

Kiermyer has toured all over the world and has played at some of the most prestigious festivals and venues. He grew up in Montreal, Canada, and started playing the drums when he was just four years old. His first drums were bongos, which his grandfather got for him when he was 9-years-old. Kiermyer’s first professional gig was when he was just 13-years-old. Kiermyer continued to play drums throughout his teenage years and eventually started touring with different bands.

When Kiermyer was 21, he moved to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming a professional jazz drummer. Kiermyer quickly made a name for himself in the jazz scene and started working with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Kiermyer’s Work

Kiermyer’s work is inspired by a variety of spiritual musicians including the late period of John Coltrane and his quartet of McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Garrison. Kiermyer has been praised for his ability to channel the spiritual energy of these musicians in his own playing.

Having reached a turning point in his evolution, Kiermyer spent much of 2001 to 2010 in remote Himalayan regions of Nepal and India on various solitary Buddhist meditation retreats, following the instructions of his teacher Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. His musical output during this time was minimal. Kiermyer has stated that he felt this period was instrumental in reaching his spiritual and musical goals.
