Danny Farrant – Drummer of Legendary Punk Band

Danny Farrant is the current drummer in the British punk band Buzzcocks, he joined the group following Phil Barker’s departure in 2006. According to Buzzcocks singer Pete Shelley, when he joined the band, Farrant learned thirty songs in two days. Danny Farrant also plays guitar, bass and keyboards.

Not many people know Danny Farrant started out in a Black metal band, he played drums for the death/thrash metal band ‘Cradle of Thorns‘. Danny plays every track from their 1997 demo tape which included a cover of Sepultura’s classic. Danny has also been credited as playing drums on Cradle of Thorns 2000 re-release of ‘Scorn Defeat’ on Bullroser records. 

Danny left the band in 2000, after some lineup changes which also saw Danny lose his position as a vocalist, Danny formed Raging Speedhorn (after auditioning for Cradle of Thorns) with Steve Batty (ex Intense Degree). Danny stayed with Raging Speedhorn until 2004, Danny was asked to play drums for The Wildhearts after their previous drummer had quit.

Farrant was a member of a short-lived new wave group called Safreak – a name that was culled from a half-erased piece of graffiti. After leaving Safreak, Farrant formed a band called Burning Hearts.

Tour and Concert

Later, Danny toured with the Wildhearts from early 2005, before leaving in August 2005 Danny’s final appearance as a member of Raging Speedhorn came at Download Festival that same year.  In October 2012 Danny joined the original lineup of British punk rock band The Lurkers on drums, Danny played his first show with the group at Rebellion Festival 2012. He has also recently recorded with Hard Rock/Punk band Anti product (UK), at the time, he recorded the drums for 5 tracks of their 2011 album ‘Take it back, give it hell’. 

Inspiration on Music

He has described the Sex Pistols song “God Save The Queen” as being his biggest inspiration in music.  Danny is a big fan of Motörhead and Philthy Animal Taylor, he was asked to join The Lurkers after being spotted at a Max Raptor gig. Danny said in an interview with Daily Mail “Max has been one of my best mates for years so I couldn’t turn down such an amazing opportunity.” 

Danny has been an avid skateboarder since his mid-teens after being inspired by bands such as Suicidal Tendencies. For the drumming he uses DW Drums, Danny has admitted he can be a very messy drummer at times. Danny said in an interview “Sometimes it’s like there’s no point in taking the drum kit home because I am making ‘that’ much mess”.

Danny composes music for Film, Radio, and Television. Danny also teaches drums in North London. He is currently still playing with The Lurkers and has played with other bands such as The Wildhearts, Cradle of Thorns, Anti product (UK), Hardcore Superstar (SE). Danny has also been credited with writing the song ‘Means to an End’ from The Lurkers 2008 album ‘Back from the Dead’. Danny has a Blackbelt in Shotokan Karate and is a professional firefighter.
